From the Pastor's Pen
Relationships that is.  Many scale back their work during the summer seeking a bit of re-creation, still re-laxing, and re-newal to help them stay strong and be stronger in the fall.  Activity may actually increase during the summer but it often revolves around people, around relationships.

Perhaps this is a subconscious response to our need for the health and healing only relationships bring.

Are relationships essential or merely add-on’s?  While I was on vacation I had to decide if going to worship Sunday was an add-on or essential in nurturing and growing my spiritual friendship with God. I’m so glad we went.  I don’t think worship was an add-on for me.

In the change of pace while we were vacationing it was sometimes hard to read my Bible each day.  Again, I had to decide if I could let it go because it was a good add-on, or if I needed to make it part of each day so I got closer to the Father instead of creating distance between us. Through prayer I was convicted to not miss reading the Bible each day as lectio divina.

“Lectio divina is a slow, contemplative praying of the Scriptures. Time set aside in a special way for lectio divina enables us to discover in our daily life an underlying spiritual rhythm.

Within this rhythm, we discover an increasing ability to offer more of ourselves and our relationships to the Father, and to accept the embrace that God is continuously extending to us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ.

Very often our concerns, our relationships, our hopes and aspirations, naturally intertwine with our meditations on the Scriptures. We can attend “with the ear of our hearts” to our own memories, listening for God’s presence in the events of our lives. We experience Christ reaching out to us through our own memories. Our own personal story becomes salvation history.” —Luke Dysinger, “How to practice lectio divina”.

As we enter the last third of the summer I encourage you to pray, read God’s letters to you (the Bible), and not miss worship wherever you are. You are in my prayers and I trust I am in yours.  Also, you are…
On my heart,
Pastor Randy

Thank You: Thank you for all the cards, calls, prayers and donations in memory of my mom, Wanda Butler.  Our church family has shown what the body of Christ is all about. Your support is truly a blessing. Thanks, Dede Huggins and family.

Thank you: to the chancel & bell choirs. Our family is so grateful for the contribution you made to the memorial fund for our mother. The Methodist church was an important part of her life, especially the bell choir. She would be honored to be remembered in this way. We are truly blessed by your kindness. Love & Prayers - the Magness Family.

Thank you: Thank you so much for the donation to the food pantry that your (children) brought to Quapaw Quarter UMC recently.  Your money will be used to purchase at the Arkansas Food Bank to help the poor and the homeless. Sincerely, Martha Johnson.

Coming Sunday, Aug. 8: Our very own Bob Coleman will preach at both worship services - it’s Gideon Sunday! (More details in the next newsletter).
